Minty Manicure

In keeping with the peppermint theme from yesterday, allow me to show you what manicure I plan to get this year for Christmas.

If my manicurist is skilled enough, I would love my nails to look like this:

lookin' tasty!

I think I'll be wearing a cream coloured dress this year, so my nails would look lovely with it..only thing is, the dress will very likely be too big for me by Christmas! Regardless, I think those nails are so pretty, and I'm really hoping my manicurist will be able to do it. We'll see!

Friday Fun

I did my hair not too long ago, but I went back yesterday to get it coloured. I knew I needed a bit of a trim, and Bianca suggested cutting it a bit shorter than usual.

I LOVE the colour! A slightly different shade to what I did the last time, and I love it. Also, I sometimes have a sideswept or parted fringe, but more often than not, it's all just pushed up and clipped back. This time, I asked her to to blow-dry my fringe straight, just to see what it looks and feels like. It looked fantastic when I walked out....but after a while, I kinda just pushed it out of the way. It's confirmed - I don't like my hair falling into my eyes. I can't do a short fringe though, because it curls, and then looks awful. As it is, my fringe now is really curled up, especially since I didn't have time to do anything with it this morning.

I'm going back in a couple of weeks to get it done for Christmas.

Bella was right; I really do need to watch the 'rockumentary' It "focuses on African American women's hair, including the styling industry surrounding it, the acceptable look of African American women's hair in society, and the effects of both upon African American culture" (from the Wiki page), but she said there's a lot in it I'd agree with. For one thing...spending LOADS of money on hair. I complain about being broke all the time, but I spend about a thousand bucks a year on my hair. It's paying off though; my hair is looking a lot better, it's healthier, and most importantly, I like it.

Alright then, enough blather about my hair.

~|~|~|~

Met up with Bella after that, and as always, it's lovely to hang out with her. It's funny how we became friends; I'm convinced that if she hadn't been living just down the street from me back in secondary school, such that her place became my second home, we wouldn't have become so close. Superficially, we have nothing in common; our tastes in music and literature differ greatly. She works in the arts industry; I work in administration. She's a great people person; I generally avoid hanging out in groups. And the list goes on.

But go a little deeper...and well, we've been through so much together. She's been there through each and every time I got my heart broken; she knows of most of my embarrassing secrets. We've seen each other through our awkward teenage years, and we're stumbling through adulthood together. We have inside jokes that we still find hilarious. We can go ages without any contact, but when we meet again, it's like no time at all has passed. We don't see each other very often, but if either of us really need someone, it only takes a text.

In short, she's my 3a.m. friend. More importantly, she's my sister of the heart. And one can never have too many sisters.

Gosh, I'm rather mushy today. That's probably because I didn't get much sleep. Plus, I'm procrastinating at work. But enough of that. Time to get down to work again. On a flipping Saturday. Groan groan.

~|~|~|~

But hey, I have a birthday party to go to today! One of my second cousins is celebrating her 8th (and I feel awful; I can't remember when her birthday actually is!), and she's having a fairy-themed party. Looks like I gotta get out my wand and wings! Oh, and I have to figure out the password too. Kids these days, making it so difficult to get to the cake!

~|~|~|~

Not that I'm going to be having any cake...I'd be disappointed about it, if not for the fact that I'm now visibly slimmer than I was a couple weeks ago.

How much slimmer? Well, I haven't measured yet, but now I slip into my jeans easily. I can slouch about at home in my jeans, without having to unbutton them any more. Yes, yes, it was highly difficult and uncomfortable to slouch over in my jeans. But now! Now they feel fine. In fact, they're a little loose! I have to wear a belt for the first time in months! I took my belt off its hook yesterday, and dusted it off. Literally dusted it off.

I don't have my huge tummy bump any more. In other words, I no longer look like I'm preggers! Well, damn. There goes people giving up their seats on the train for me.

I screwed up a bit yesterday - I forgot to bring my dinner to work, so went from work to hair to Bella, and didn't get home til 2am. So yeah. Skipped dinner. NOT GOOD.

But I've learnt my lesson; won't let it happen again. I can't wait to fit into my skinny jeans again!

~|~|~|~

Speaking of jeans, I was well amused last night to discover that Bella had no idea you're supposed to turn jeans inside out with you wash them. For those of you who also didn't know that, well...turning jeans inside out when you wash them helps to maintain the colour and shape. Ok? Ok.
Also, you don't have to wash your jeans every single week. Unlike my dear OCD-inflicted friend, who seems to think that jeans get manky after only a week. Every single week. I'm still shaking my head.

~|~|~|~

Another bimbo moment from Bella that I simply have to mention. We were talking about weird things we've eaten (or will never eat), which stemmed from me mentioned that I didn't like stinky tofu. We all agreed that we'll never eat balut, although we have a sneaking suspicion that it's probably really good. And a great source of protein. Besides, we eat eggs. We eat chicken. Why not the in-between? But...no. Just no.

Bella asked her friend, who's travelled a fair bit, about what's the weirdest thing he's ever eaten. He said that it was 'whale semen'. To which Bella responded "How do you..I dunno...harvest? How do you get whale semen?" We all just stared at her for a moment, before she realised that the whale is killed first. Yes, she did for a few seconds think that whale semen is "harvested" by some form of jacking it off. Lots of hilarity ensued, of course, complete with arm movements. Watch out for the next dance craze: The Whale-Wank.

Note: I do have my thoughts and opinions on whaling, but there's a time and place for discussing them. Last night wasn't the time, this blog isn't the place. :)

Bah.

Sometimes it's tough to keep a positive outlook, on days that are just wrong wrong wrong. I've been grumpy for the past couple days, as Neko can attest. I couldn't think why I was so moody for no apparent reason, until I got an email reminding me of Aunt Flo's impending visit. It's not like I overly mind having Aunt Flo drop by; it's just that she gets a bit annoying at times, and affects my mood rather more than I'd like.

Didn't help that today was just a...not-quite-fantastic day. I texted a couple of my friends yesterday, asking if they wanted to meet up for dinner tonight. They both said they'll get back to me today. Neither of them did. And honestly, I'm not going to bother to call/text to ask them again, if they can't be bothered to send me a simple text to say they can't make it.

Work didn't go too well today either, and I was just an emotional wreck at the end of the day. It's odd that these days, I don't cry when I'm sad, but when I'm frustrated, I do.

Mum wasn't in the best mood either, and sometimes I worry about her. But we haven't yet arrived at the stage where she pours out troubles to me, and I'm usually at a loss as to how to deal with anything emotional. So we just left it...but I did try to make her laugh a bit. And I'm quite glad that she did seem to cheer up a bit.

The evening picked up a bit though. I pretty much just cocooned myself in my shell the whole evening, watching TV shows.

Psych is back! After their mid-season hiatus, that is. It's good to see the show again, always lots of laughs to be had. And this week's episode had Cary Elwes guest starring! Always win.

Misfits is back! Their second series opener was this week, and it was brilliant! I definitely cheered up after watching it, what with Nathan's lines. So many great lines that I can't pick my favourite. I have decided against using "monkeyslut" as my password. Everyone knows it!

Also watched a couple episodes of Community. Their Halloween episode "Epidemiology" (caution: spoilers) is one of my favourites now. Zombies! It's such a genre-savvy show, and it's just so cleverly written.

So yes, that's how I spent my day. Being grumpy at work, then being grumpy at home.

Once in a while, I have my off days. And that's okay.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

Got a haircut on Thursday, since I was early in town. Went to see my regular hairstylist, over at Plaza Sing.
I'm so very glad that I finally found a hairstylist I like. I have a specific list of criteria for hairstylists and manicurists, so it's a relief to find someone that I want to stick with.

She's great, she really is. She knows how to handle my hair, understands my likes/dislikes, and makes it a point to understand just what I want. She's patient and helpful with my questions, isn't afraid to tell me when something just won't look good, and offers suggestions and tips. Plus, she's professional and smart and funny (and yes, kinda cute. Eye candy is always good), and it's always a pleasure to chat with her. And she just gives really great service. for example, she remembers how I take my tea, and prepares it just how I like it. She gave me a suggestion on what I can do with my hair for Christmas, for she knows I'd like to do something new, and I find myself looking forward to it.

Oh, and my hair isn't really different, just shorter. I love change in my life, but when I find a minimum-maintenance hairstyle I like, I tend to stick to it. :)

If you want a great hairstylist, I'd strongly recommend Bianca, over at Hair Mechanics, Plaza Singapura. Tell her I sent you.

'Cause it makes me happy!

So for reasons that will remain undisclosed, I was in a pretty foul mood when I left the office yesterday. I had a couple hours to kill before tutoring, so decided to have myself a wander around JP.

I hate that mall. It has to be the worst mall in the country. It's crowded and cramped, and not just your regular crowd. Oh no, I'm convinced that the most oblivious and inconsiderate members of the population all congregate at JP.

So I stuck to the outskirts. I went to OP, where there was a sale. But there was nothing. Giordano failed me too. (Although I might go back to grab me a few more basic tees. A girl can't have too many white t-shirts!) Decided to go to the new wing to see if I'd find something pretty to cheer me up.

Found myself walking past Levi's Signature (it's in that passageway between JP1 and JP2). And decided, what the hell. I'll just look around.

Ended up getting not one, but TWO pairs of jeans. For only $99.90! That's right, two pairs of jeans, each for only $49.95!
And I acted fast! I also signed up for the membership, and received 20% off a lovely new shirt! In addition, I got a lovely tote bag, absolutely FREE!

Two pairs of jeans, one top, a bag and the promise of future discounts. All mine, for less than two hundred!

So yes, I was in a foul mood when I left the office later, and two hours later, was pretty darn pleased with myself. There were too many factors conspiring against me to put me in a better mood:

1. the weather was gorgeous. Quite cool, clear skies... Not a cloud to be seen! Absolutely gorgeous.

2) Did you not see the above? New jeans. Two pairs, even. And a new shirt. And a new bag. Never underestimate the power of retail therapy.

3) Yesterday was a good hair day. 'Nuff said.

4) Life's too short and too sweet to waste it on being moody.

5) Speaking of sweet, I do believe I was going on about chocolate.

Is it really Thursday already? How time flies when you're happy!

Friiiiidaaaay!!!!

And what a glorious Friday it has been, too!

I cannot turn on my old laptop at all. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do? To get my files out. Please don't suggest throwing it out; I've already thought of that. I need to get my files out somehow.

BUT. I have a new toy! The Sony Vaio CS316! In red! Isn't she pretty?!?
No, I'm not using her just yet, because I don't have the password for the wireless internet just yet, and I'm not going to bug the Dadman for it. He just said he'll get it for me tomorrow, so it's all good.

I was at the store, and I was looking at the display pieces. I couldn't decide between the sweet pink one and the "noble brown" one. The brown one would have matched my camera, but the pink one was oh so sweet.

The lovely (and rather cute) staff who was assisting me said he'll check if the red is in stock. Meanwhile, I'm still standing there feeling torn between the pink and brown. He comes back, saying "OMG we like TOTALLY have the red in stock! And I'll show it to ya mmmkay?"
Well...ok, maybe not quite in those words.
So he brings out a box, and pulls out a laptop...and...and...

Love at first sight.

Plus, I got the carry case (also red!) and a bluetooth mouse (red!) and a 4gig thumbdrive (not red.) thrown in as well! Oh, and an upgrade to 4gb ram! For free!

*sighs happily*

Helped that salesguy was kinda cute too. I know his name, and I know where he works. *crafty smile*

As if I hadn't spent enough money, I then proceeded to complete one item on my list.
66. Buy a diamond ring for myself.

It's pretty. I like it. Even TehTarik knew immediately, when she looked at a few rings I'd picked out, that this was the one I'd decided on. It had, according to her, my name written all over it!

Today I give thanks for:
The person who invented cup noodles.
Yes, sounds like a lame thing to be thankful for, but cup noodles have saved me from going hungry many many times.

Happy moments of the day:
- chocolate chip cookies. I had quite a few today. Nom nom nom!

- laughing with my colleague

- shopping with TehTarik

- getting a nice pretty LBD

- setting my eyes on Red, and falling in love.  TehTarik saw my reaction and knew immediately that I'd lost my heart to it

- completing #66 on my list.

--

Tomorrow, I work in the morning. Get a manicure after work. And go for my colleague's son's wedding dinner in the evening.

Life, my friends, might be what happens when you're busy making other plans...

but every day, in every way, it's getting better and better.

Time flies!

One week into the new year, and I'm still having a good time. Today was rather uneventful. Have loads of work to do, which is good; I'd rather be occupied than to be bored witless.

Fixed dinner tonight. The simplest thing ever to make: pasta! The sauce was easy, just had more steps than just opening the jar...
Olive oil, garlic, minced beef, tomato-based sauce straight out of the jar, mushrooms (man, I hate slicing those), black olives (man, I hate slicing those too), cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, and dried herbs.

Verdict: I liked it. I just can't do tomato-based pasta without cheese though. Mmmm...cheese.

Tomorrow! Is Thursday!
I think I'll go shopping. Want to get a new dress for Saturday; colleague's son's wedding dinner, and I haven't a stitch to wear. I do, however, have great shoes! Can't very well show up wearing nothing but shoes, though, so I might want to make sure I have a pretty dress to to with it.
Shopping!

I think I'll go get manicured. My nails are really long, and it'd be nice to have them pretty on Saturday. How on earth did they grow so long, though? They were rather short at Christmas, and that was only 2 weeks ago! Oh well. They're so long, the nail-biter in me is crying. I'm so glad I've stopped biting my nails; it's rather difficult to act the dumb ditz with ugly nails. ;)

How has the time passed so quickly today? it's already 10:30pm! Have to do dishes, and that includes pots and pans. Which I'm not a big fan of doing. Technically, I don't have to do it, but how pleasant would it be for Mum to come home to a sinkload of dirty dishes, ey?

Ok, plan for tonight:
Do dishes, pick out and iron clothes for tomorrow (hmm. Jeans again? Perhaps.), brush teeth, wash face, remind Doof of five (FIVE?!?), then go to bed. Couple games of Tetris on my phone, then sleep.

Good plan, no?

I am deliberately not thinking of quotes about the best-laid plans, and what happens when you're busy making other plans.

Happy moments of the day:
- Joking with PopTart!Boss*; he has a great sense of humour, and understands mine

- Having homecooked food for lunch in the office

- realising I'll have homecooked food for lunch in the office tomorrow, because of my

- cooking dinner for Bro and Sis2**

- Meeting Bro at the bus stop and walking home with him

- Teasing and getting teased by Stella & the guys on the way home

- Conversing and communicating with the Leprechaun. 3 times.

- Two words: black olives. Black. Olives. BLACK. OLIVES.

- Cheeeeese.

* I call him PopTart!Boss because (well, actually Bunny started calling him that) because he's the one who knows I love pop tarts, and a couple times now, he's left a box of pop tarts on my desk.

** "Cook dinner for the family" is #7 on my list, but I'm not sure if I should count today as part of mission 101. I did plan to cook dinner for the family tonight, but Mum called me at the office this morning and told me she'd be out, and asked me to see to dinner for me and Bro.
So does it still count? I'll have to think about that.

Hokay. Time to see if I can make headway on those plans.

3 Days In

Wow, it felt good waking up late today! And not having to go to work.
Met up with TehTarik at West Mall for a late lunch. I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't as crowded as I'd thought it would be. Ended up buying stuff at Watsons. TehTarik and I agreed that even if you don't need anything, you can walk into Watsons, and find something that you do need/want. The good thing about spending money at Watsons is knowing that you're not wasting money - that is, if you're getting toiletries, and not some of the rubbish that they do have. After all, things like toothpaste and cotton pads do get used! Unlike shoes..*eyes shoe cupboard guiltily*

Found this little booth at West Mall that sells OPI nail polish for far cheaper than nail salons do! Of course, we ended up getting a bottle each. And went to her place and painted our nails.

Did you know that Pastamania does delivery? I didn't, but I do now!
*burp*

Semi-watched a couple of movies: The Darjeeling Limited on dvd, and another one that I can't quite recall right now.

I did say I only semi-watched it.

Finished watching the movie just in time to catch Whose Line Is It Anyway? and as always, it was a great laugh. I love the rapport between Colin and Ryan.
Gotta admit, I don't quite find female comedians as amusing...

Left her place shortly after to meet up with Yvonne. Hadn't seen her in ages, and it was good catching up again. She's another person whom I admire a lot, for her positive outlook on life.

Happy moments of the day:
Joking with my mum and BabyGirl before leaving to meet TehTarik
Finding a really nice OPI nail colour
Cuddling BabyGirl and tucking her in, and getting a kiss
Watching Whose Line
Hanging out with TehTarik and Yvonne

Today's Thanksgiving:
I am thankful for my sister, who is the epitome of courage and optimism and determination.

Just heard this song on the radio, and this line always stands out for me:

You can't please everyone, so you gotta please yourself

Only three days in, and I'm having a great year so far. I feel the same way Bunny does, so I'm going to quote her here:
"All in all, 2009 has been great so far. Sure it's only the beginning, but I think it's an indication of how things are going to be for the rest of the year. And you know what? I like it. "
