2017: A Year in Review

Like I said, this year went by in a hurry, didn't it?!

1. What did you do in 2017 that you’d never done before?
Rented a private island for a long weekend. And big milestone - I bought property!

2. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Pfft resolutions. Does anyone actually keep them?
I'm making two for 2018 though:
1) read more. Now that I have my own personal library, I have the perfect place to curl up with a cup of coffee (or wine!) to enjoy a good book.
2) Journal more. If not on this blog, at least a line a day on my One Line A Day journal.

Let's see how well those go, yeah?

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nobody I'm especially close to, but, let's see. (Ex) neighbour's daughter had her first (it's a girl!) and a couple of my colleagues had new grandkids. So there's that!
Also, just found out that my cousin is pregnant, so I'll be adding her name to this list next year!

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Again, nobody I'm close to personally. BIL's granddad passed away last month, RS' ex-wife (lovely lady, I'm glad I got to meet her) earlier this month, and A. Jen's dad breathed his last on the eve of Christmas Eve. May they rest in peace.

5. What countries did you visit?
Let's see. Malaysia - first time in Cameron Highlands (hey, another first!). I went to Jakarta, Indonesia (OMG yet another first!) to hang out with Uncle L & Iona. And then again to Pulau Pangkil.

I'm waiting for this project to be completed before going on a proper holiday. In the meantime, I'm happy with short breaks and long weekends. :)

6. What would you like to have in 2018 that you lacked in 2017?
What is this, the third year in a row that I still haven't bothered to get my driver's licence? Then again, I've been busy with loads of other things, and I've accomplished so much, so...meh. I'll eventually get my licence, but in the meantime, I'm Ubering and Grabbing my way around town.

(also, a love life would be fun. then again, part of me really can't be arsed to deal with a partner hehe)

7. What date from 2017 will remain etched upon your memory?
Not so much a date per se, but more of the entire experience? The Mitches rented a private island for a weekend, as a surprise destination celebration for a 50th birthday, and the party started here in Singapore, with the party bus. At 7am. Complete with smoke machine, blasting music and strobe lights. All the way to Tanah Merah, where the party continued on the ferry, and then the long car ride, and another boat ride...Bonfires on the beach, falling asleep under the stars, enjoying an amazing fireworks show. Ate too much, smoked too much, drank...just the right amount. It was an epic weekend with an epic crew.
And we've decided to make the island getaway an annual thing; that's how much we loved it!

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Oh. My. God. Buying a damn HDB flat. And I did run a couple 10K races this year, so that was fun.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Yikes. I guess it was a failure to save up enough, and stick to my budget? I spent WAY too much on my flat and furnishings...and I'm not even done yet!

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nothing serious, thankfully! Injured my ankle for a bit. Couple migraines, a few "bad days"...and a bout with the 'flu. Oh, I did get quite ill during/after my trip to Jakarta. Something about too little sleep and too many cigarettes, hmm.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Did I not mention my flat yet? Well, that...and everything in it. :)

>12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
I'm so very proud of Babygirl, as always. Niece turned 21 - she's an adult now! I remember holding her in my arms for the first time, and now she's taller than me! - and she's just incredible. She's worked really hard, and continues to work hard at uni.

>13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Nobody close to me, I suppose? Which is a good thing! Then again, I've started to be heartless about letting go of people who aren't exactly healthy for me. Selfish? Perhaps. But so much better for my mental and emotional well-being.

In particular, one of mum's friends. Or perhaps I should say former friend. I didn't like her from the start; something about her just vibed me the wrong way. True enough, her true colours eventually shone through, and after a bit of hurt and anger from Mum (and from me, on behalf of Mum), we've let all that ugly business go.

But hey, if we're talking in general...well, the entirety of the current US presidency, I suppose. That, and the stupidity and blindness of his die-hard supporters (and if I'm to be honest, those on the other end of the spectrum too.)

14. Where did most of your money go?
...My flat. Uber/taxis, the little bit of travel I did...and oh so much food and drinks!

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
HAVE I NOT MENTIONED MY FLAT YET? I FLIPPING LOVE IT OKAY.
Got excited over every little step. Signing the papers, making the appointments. Getting it renovated. Furniture shopping. Appliance shopping. Furniture assembly. Curtain installation. Decorating. Just... having my own damn place to do whatever I damn well please.
So stressful, so tiring...but oh so worth it.

16. What song/album will always remind you of 2017?
Scrapping this question from this year, remember?

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a. Happier or sadder? Eh. About the same?
b. Thinner or fatter? Maybe a wee bit fatter. But I lost lots of weight before that, and I managed to not gain it all back this year, so go me! I can still just about fit into my jeans, so there's that!
c. Richer or poorer? Yikes. Asset-richer, cash-poorer. Goddamn property purchase.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Omg. To quote myself from last year, "Reading. I participated in a Reading Bingo with Crisis, and well...didn't manage to make a bingo. I did read lots of fanfic, but my stash of unread books is getting larger and larger..."
That's still true! But hey, see resolution above.
I also wish I'd done a wee bit more budgeting and saving. But eh, I'm managing.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Procrastinate. There will come a day when I don't procrastinate! ...today is not that day.

20. How will you be spending/did you spend Christmas?
Let's see now. Got a half day on the 22nd, so managed to get some last minute things done. Chilled out at my place for a bit. On the eve of Christmas eve, as with almost every year, I didn't get any sleep! Well, I did, but I didn't go to bed until about 6am. Not partying, no. I was wrapping a few more of my gifts, and wrapped up most of Mum's for her.

Christmas mass on the eve, as always, and then supper at Mum's. Sis #1 and her clan are off in London for the season, so we won't see them til NYE. Which is also when we're doing our Secret Santa gift exchange, so that's another thing to look forward to! Dad was funny though; we were giving the kids their presents, and giving some other random presents to everyone else. He then presented me with a gift, telling me that he was my SS, and we were all like noooo! We're not doing SS exchange til NYE! Whoops! Now I have to spend the rest of the week with that box under the tree just calling my name, and I can't unwrap it for a few more days...

I upheld the grand tradition of sleeping in on Christmas morning, had a leisurely afternoon at home, and then off to Great Aunt's place for dinner. Sis #2 and her lot joined us as well, so that was another lovely evening, full of family joy for Christmas.

NYE will be another late night, I'll probably spend all of the first day of 2018 fast asleep!

21. Who did you spend the most time on the phone with?
Texting - let's go with texting. And IM'ing. I don't really chat on the phone these days...who does?
Nekowife and Mego for IMing (thank goodness for the Void!); Family chat group...Bella and Misstsy, I suppose.

22. Did you fall in love in 2017?
Yes. With my new flat. MY OWN SPACE, YO.

23. How many one night stands in this last year?
A lady doesn't kiss and tell. And neither do I.

24. What was your favourite TV programme?
Stranger Things, again! Season 2, this time. Parenthood. The Office. Why yes, I'm catching up on shows that are over and done with. Hurrah for Netflix!

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Nah. It's just too much damn effort and I can't be bothered.

26. What was the best book(s) you read?
I'm not sure, actually. I guess nothing that made a huge impact on me that now I don't recall? Hmm. I'll have to go look at my list of books read this year. Then again, I didn't read as much as I'd have liked to this year. That said, I have high hopes for my reading habit in 2018... I now have my own library!

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Not so much a discovery, as a REdiscovery, really!
I really enjoyed music by Bastille and Passenger and Imagine Dragons, but the major rediscovery this year is that I really love AC/DC, Led Zep and Queen. Well, I've always known how much I love Queen, but I've been listening to a lot more this year.

28. What did you want and get?
If you haven't figured it out by now...

29. What did you want and not get?
Hmm. A flat with a balcony? One with a better view? A million dollars?

30. What were your favourite films of this year?
Wonder Woman for sure. I'm not much for DC movies, but oh my WOW. That movie was just KICK. ASS.
Followed closely by Thor: Ragnarok. Packed with action, comedy and geekery. What more could a girl ask for?
I also enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Oh dear, all three of my fave 2017 movies are based on comics. What a nerd.

Lots of awesome movies in the line-up for 2018...I'm so excited!

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Well, I wasn't feeling too good, if I recall correctly, and it was a bit of a lazy Saturday. But I did go out for Gin & Tradition with Yaya. :)
A lovely little tradition started in 2014, and we did the same thing 3 years running. I suspect we might be able to keep up with that tradition for a few more years, seeing as how this project is going on FOREVER.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
More travel, perhaps? This year has been...terrible, and yet...I'm still really happy.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2017?
Well, beginning of the year, I bought 5 dresses. One for each weekday, so I don't have the daily "what-to-wear" dilemma. So, personal fashion concept? Lazy bastard. :)

34. What kept you sane?
Music. Hurrah for Spotify! Running, too. Helped clear my mind a fair bit!

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Still the one and only Chris Evans...although Gal Gadot was a close runner-up!

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The #MeToo movement. Something quite close to my heart; it makes me so angry to think and read about it. But it's also made me so proud of the women (and men!) standing up against sexual harassment and abuse. No pity, no shame, no silence!

37. Who did you miss?
I guess BabyGirl, but other than that...nobody much? The general missing the kids or the fam or my girls when they're not around, but there was no pining involved whatsoever.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
I probably did meet a few new people, but...nobody worth writing home about, methinks. Sorry, new people.Well, I reckon the only new people I met this year were Uber drivers, food delivery people and new vendors. Oh, and we got a new ConMan in...but wait, technically I'd met him before.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2017.
That it's not always possible to do everything alone. I can do lots of things alone, but sometimes...it's okay to ask for help.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year?
Hahha, it's gotta be these ones.
>
"I love this bar; It's my kind of place." and "Son of a bitch! Gimme a drink!"

2016: A Year in Review

That time of year again, folks!

1. What did you do in 2016 that you’d never done before?
Completed my thesis. Achieved a Master's Degree. Go me!

2. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I said this time last year: "I never make resolutions. I just continue to live each day as it comes, and be grateful for what and who I have in my life. And to keep laughing."

I kept those. And I will continue to keep them.

Although I will confess to deciding to get fitter and healthier in 2017; I've even signed up for a 10K run. Not sure if ambitious or insane...

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Aww man, I can never remember this! Let's see. Ex-colleague WW (who I still miss dearly) had her second child. Did anyone else pop this year? Nope, I'm pretty sure that's about it.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
A. Nan. Not related by blood, but I've known her pretty much all my life, and she and Ma were bosom friends. She passed after a painful battle with cancer. I miss her, but have found peace in knowing that her suffering is over.

Although...speaking of deaths...what the hell, 2016?!

5. What countries did you visit?
First time in India! Spent a long weekend in Bangalore with Doof. Absolutely loved it!
Went to Malaysia (Melaka, to be precise) with Nekowife.

6. What would you like to have in 2017 that you lacked in 2016?
Wahahah still my driving licence! I'm such a lazy arse, omg. And now that I've become an Uber addict...what's the point of getting my licence, really? So much better to be chauffeured around. XD

7. What date from 2016 will remain etched upon your memory?
I don't remember dates all too well...perhaps that's a factor in my dismal History grade in school! Let's see anyway, hmm. August 19th is a good one! Was my birthday, had loads of fun with friends and colleagues, came home (alright, I staggered home) to find my certificate had arrived. So yeah, that's a good date.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
My thesis. While still working full-time. Again I say, go me!

9. What was your biggest failure?
As always, I failed to stop procrastinating. But stop procrastinating I shall! Starting in the new year, methinks...

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Other than a few sniffles here and there and a bout of the 'flu, nothing much. Well, I did have a really bad episode of depression, but I'm now much better at dealing with it, or at least reaching out for help. I'm so blessed to have such a great support system.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
My new MacBook. Not that I've used it much; I've been so involved with so many other activities!

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
My standard answer: Mum and BabyGirl. The Niece and nephews are pretty great too, and I'm always so proud of them.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Wow. WOW. I can't even begin to talk about this! A couple people I'm related to have displayed utterly appalling and disgusting behaviour, and it's so very disappointing. I feel sad for them, but after what they've said and done to my loved ones, I'm not going to bother trying to make amends. They've burned that bridge good and proper.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Uber, for sure. Watched several concerts and plays this year, and tickets for those aren't cheap either!

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Getting to see Nekowife again! Getting to see Doof again! Ah, good times.

16. What song/album will always remind you of 2016?
Ya know, I think I'm going to scrap/change this question from next year. I don't associate music with the year. I associate it more with...people? events? feelings?

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a. Happier or sadder? Oh, happier for sure!
b. Thinner or fatter? Wow. Definitely thinner. I lost about 10 kg in a couple months. To make it sound more impressive, that's a whopping 26 and a half pounds!
c. Richer or poorer? Hmm. Richer, I would think. Less debt, more savings.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Reading. I participated in a Reading Bingo with Crisis, and well...didn't manage to make a bingo. I did read lots of fanfic, but my stash of unread books is getting larger and larger...

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Slacking off. Procrastination will be the death of me. Unless I'm procrastinating that too!

20. How will you be spending/did you spend Christmas?
Oh, Christmas was busy, and just absolutely lovely. Couple weeks before Christmas, my team and I went out for dinner and drinks, and boy, was that an amazing night!

Got a half day on the 23rd, so was back by noon! Which meant that I actually had time to get stuff done and even have a nap. I actually slept at night on the 23rd, which is quite unheard of; it's almost tradition at this point that I don't get any sleep on the 23rd!

Christmas Mass was pretty early this year; we attended Christmas Eve mass, and then the whole clan assembled at Mum's as usual for supper and gift opening. Our neighbour (best neighbour ever!) cooked dinner for us, so Mum got a wee bit of a break.

Christmas Day itself was spent sleeping in, and then I went over to Bella's folks' place for lunch. Bro picked me up from there to go visit my Great Aunt, and we spent a lovely evening there.
Boxing Day was pretty busy too! Brunch with Auntie MM and her family over at Banana Leaf Apolo. Came home, napped with BabyGirl, then Mum's friend Jenn came over for dinner. Another late night!
Whew, that was a long rundown, and it's not even over yet!

Family Xmas party at home tonight, so that'll be a late night. And since we're on the topic of partying, tomorrow is NYE, and there'll be drinking and staying up late...so Sunday has been designated the Hangover (and watch Sherlock!) Day. And Monday will be spent on Recovery & Regret, before going back to work on Tuesday...

21. Who did you spend the most time on the phone with?
Ok seriously, this is a ridiculous question, especially in this day and age. Who actually spends time on the phone?! Most of my calls are just quick ones, not actual chatting. But I did text and IM a lot!

22. Did you fall in love in 2016?
Nope. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm even capable of falling in love anymore...unless we're talking platonic love, agape, storge, etc. in which case, yes. Lots. Over and over.

23. How many one night stands in this last year?
;)

24. What was your favourite TV programme?
Stranger Things, hands down.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
'Hate' is such a strong word! Well, last year someone's mere presence annoyed me, and this year...still. Those couple people I mentioned earlier? I have no time for them any more.

26. What was the best book(s) you read?
Hmm. Sycamore Row by John Grisham, which is the sequel to A Time to Kill, was fairly interesting. It didn't grip me as much as A Time to Kill did, but it was still a decent read. I think Animal Farm was the best book this year though. I read it as a kid, but it makes a lot more sense as an adult. And with 2016 being the year it was, I figured some Orwellian dystopia, especially this one, was appropriate.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
I've made several this year, one of which is that there are several country songs that I really, really love...
I discovered several artistes, e.g. Jake Owen, Chris Janson, The Glorious Sons. I rediscovered my love of Green Day. Thank goodness for Spotify!

28. What did you want and get?
To get to see Nekowife! A new laptop.

29. What did you want and not get?
More holidays. More sleep.

30. What were your favourite films of this year?
This one's easy: Deadpool.
Followed by Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Oh and Finding Dory was good fun too. As was Ghostbusters.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Oh man, I'm now old enough to buy an HDB flat as a single! I had drinks at D10 with colleagues and Bella & Misstsy, then headed over to Crazy Elephant. Got home to see that two things had arrived for me: flowers from Doof, and my diploma.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
More travel, perhaps? This year has been...terrible, and yet...I'm still really happy.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2016?
Casual chic. Or so I like to think. XD

34. What kept you sane?
Music. Again, thank goodness for Spotify!

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
It seems my heart still belongs to Chris Evans..

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The US election. What a farce.

37. Who did you miss?
Hmm. My BabyGirl, especially when I was out of town.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
I did meet a few new people, but...nobody worth writing home about, methinks.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2016.
Something that I first heard on Supernatural; although it's something I learnt a long time ago, this year it really hit home in so many ways.

"Family don't end in blood...but it doesn't start there either."

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year?
This one could be seen as sad and depressing, but to me, it's inspirational and so motivational. And so very true.

You only get one life, so you'd gotta live it.
You only get one heart, so you'd better give it....

Don't matter how long we're here, it's never gonna be long enough.
It ain't about the amount of years; it's about the amount of love.
It don't matter if you're 18, 45 or 91; no matter what we do, we're never done.
Everybody dies young.

2015: A Year in Review

Wait, what? A year in review, already?! And my last post was back in January?! Wow. Time really does fly when you're having a blast, eh?

2015 has been a pretty kickass year. It's ending off really really busy, as my dissertation is due in...eeps, 15 days!

But, as is tradition, I'm going to do this silly little thing.

1. What did you do in 2015 that you’d never done before?
Researched and wrote my thesis. Well, in the middle of writing it now.
Oh! I bought 4D for the first time! With my ang moh colleague too. It was mostly a joke, and we didn't win anything. But was still fun!

2. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I never make resolutions. I just continue to live each day as it comes, and be grateful for what and who I have in my life. And to keep laughing.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
I'm just going to offend someone by forgetting, right?
One of my colleagues had her first kid. Another colleague's wife had their, what, 3rd? Ex-colleague Wen also had her first. Friend S-Man had his first kid as well. Friend RR had her first. Wow, this was a year of firsts!

4. Did anyone close to you die?
My BIL's grandmother passed on earlier this week, just after Christmas.

5. What countries did you visit?
Wow, I didn't travel this year either, huh. I went to Batam for a weekend, that's about it. This year has been crazy busy!

6. What would you like to have in 2016 that you lacked in 2015?
Ha, would you believe...it's still my driving licence!

7. What date from 2015 will remain etched upon your memory?
Hmm, good question. I don't remember any particular dates, just events. Really good events. Epic, even. :)

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
My thesis. While still working full-time. Go me!

9. What was your biggest failure?
Failure, still not an option! I guess failure to stop procrastinating. That's...just the story of my life, it is.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I was pretty sick right before Christmas. Fever hit 40°C, I was weak and tired for days. Thank goodness I'm (almost) all better now!

11. What was the best thing you bought?
The best thing I bought...well, I'm loving this pair of M&S shoes I'm wearing. Didn't make any big ticket purchases this year...

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
As always, Mum and BabyGirl. I'm also pretty proud of the Niece - she studied so hard this year for her A's!

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Sigh. Same person as always. New person this year (there's always that one person...)
I've also been appalled by humanity in general. But I try not to dwell.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Taxis. Food. Gin & Tonics. :)

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
The impending births of friends' kids. :)

16. What song/album will always remind you of 2015?
Hello, by Adele. I love it, I hate it, it's everywhere.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a. Happier or sadder? Happier!
b. Thinner or fatter? About the same, perhaps fatter. Too much eating and drinking and merry-making!
c. Richer or poorer? Oh, definitely richer. Higher income, with minimal debt. My life rocks!

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Oh god, sleep? I constantly need sleep! Also wish I'd read more. I miss reading for pleasure.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Every year, I slack off. Every year, I procrastinate. Every year, I tell myself I'll stop.
Maybe next year, I suppose.

20. How will you be spending/did you spend Christmas?
Family and feasting, of course! SO MUCH FAMILY. SO MUCH FOOD. Also had a lovely party with the colleagues. What a great team! Another Christmas party coming up this weekend.

21. Who did you spend the most time on the phone with?
Who talks on the phone these days?! I'm gonna go with Mum.

22. Did you fall in love in 2015?
Nah. Too much effort. Lust? For sure. ;)

23. How many one night stands in this last year?
Still not spilling the beans on this one.

24. What was your favourite TV programme?
I barely watch TV. I guess Supernatural was the one I was really following? I did enjoy Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Not to the point of hate, but there's this certain person whose mere presence annoys me.

26. What was the best book(s) you read?
For pleasure and leisure? I don't think I've even read one this year! But I read the Gruffalo and the Cat in the Hat and the Enormous Turnip over and over and over...

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Oh, so many. The xx, We the Kings, George Ezra, Jack's Mannequin...

28. What did you want and get?
Wow, a lot, really.

29. What did you want and not get?
Still haven't won the lottery!

30. What were your favourite films of this year?
Avengers: AoU, AntMan...oh god, definitely Jurassic World. That one was full of action and gorgeous people, and so much nostalgia.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
What did I do on my birthday? I think I went out for drinks with my colleagues.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
As awesome as this year has been, it would have been so much more satisfying if I'd completed my thesis earlier. Also, if I'd managed to see Nekowife. Haven't seen her in forever!

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2014?
Comfortable and casual.

34. What kept you sane?
BabyGirl. Ranting to Mum and the girls. G&Ts at D10.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Chris Evans. Still.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Feminism, the patriarchy, gender roles.

37. Who did you miss?
Same thing as last year:
Still miss my Gramps.
Always miss my boys when they're not around (and then long for peace and quiet when the tornadoes show up!).
I missed Shoes, when I didn't hang with her for ages.
I don't really miss Doof, until we start chatting again, then I realise that I have indeed missed him. Yes, that's Ki-logic for you.
Definitely missed Nekowife lots. Perhaps I'll go see her in 2015 2016!

38. Who was the best new person you met?
Hmm. Didn't meet anyone worth writing about, honestly.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2015.
That the easiest way to let go really is just to let go.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year?
You've gotta swim, don't let yourself sink. Just find the horizon, I promise you it's not as far as you think.

2015 was a year that just went by in a flash. Nothing amazing happened, nothing tragic happened. I spent lots of time with friends, both old and new. I spent lots of time with family. (I'm still 'fun Aunt', so there's that.) I'm strangely excited for 2016.

New year. Bring it on.

2014: A Year in Review

Hey whoa, where'd the year go? Here's my annual end-of-year tradition!

1. What did you do in 2014 that you’d never done before?
Catalogued each and every one of my books. I have way more books than I'd thought! And I'm still buying books...hmm.

2. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I didn't make any resolutions, and won't be making any. Haven't made resolutions for years now! I am thankful for each day, and will continue to explore, dream, discover.
I do like these resolutions though...

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Teh Tarik had her second boy! Adorable little tyke, with the most smooshable cheeks.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Nope. :)

5. What countries did you visit?
I didn't travel this year; had so much on my plate. No wait, I did go to Malaysia for a long weekend in January, so there's that!

6. What would you like to have in 2015 that you lacked in 2014?
Wow, still don't have my driving licence! Think I'ma go for that. Also, a wee bit more discipline would be nice.

7. What date from 2014 will remain etched upon your memory?
I think perhaps the date I started work at my current project.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Taking care of the housework and looking after BabyGirl and studying/researching and tutoring once a week, all while still working full time. Superwoman, me.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Failure is not an option. Oh alright...still haven't made headway on my thesis. Major fail there.
Once again, failure to meet deadlines for school papers.  I'm sensing a pattern, here.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Couple migraines, hurt my back, threw my knee out for a bit. I suspect I might just be experiencing this phenomenon of 'growing old'...

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Well...does it count if I didn't buy it? Dadman bought me an iPad mini. And seeing as how I'm so creative and original when it comes to naming my electronics, this one's called...Minni Kipad.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
That of the Mother Goddess. She astounds me.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Sigh. This year, another family member. The week before Christmas too. So, so disappointed. But all is well now, so...water under the bridge, I guess.
Oh, and my mum's (now fired) helper. She'd been stealing from us, and worse, she'd been abusing my BabyGirl. She went to jail, got repatriated, and I have no idea what's happened to her since. Nor do I care, to be honest.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Oh goodness, most of it on taxis! Still my biggest vice. But it's the way to go when you don't drive, but work out in the middle of nowhere! And food. So much food!
No wait, that's not right. Most of my money went towards paying off credit cards and student loans. *groan*

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Really, really, really? THREE 'reallies', really? Nah. Cool as a cucumber, me.

16. What song/album will always remind you of 2014?
I'm all about that bass, 'bout that bass, no treble...

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a. Happier or sadder? Happier!
b. Thinner or fatter? Ha, so much fatter! All that eating and drinking and making merry...
c. Richer or poorer? Hmm. Definitely richer. Higher income now, and more importantly, not nearly as much in debt as I was last year.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
As boring as this sounds, I wish I'd slept more. Cumulative lack of sleep is finally catching up to me.
And travel. Always travel.
19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Slacking off. Once a procrastinator, always a procrastinator?

20. How will you be spending/did you spend Christmas?
Is there ever a Christmas not spent with the family? Lots of food, rugrats running around, and visiting Aunty D & Godma.

21. Who did you spend the most time on the phone with?
Mum! Which is pretty amusing, seeing as how I live with the woman!

22. Did you fall in love in 2014?
Nah. Loads of crushes, lots of lust. Love? Meh.

23. How many one night stands in this last year?
Have I ever confessed to this on my blog? No, and I never will...
That's...really nunya!

24. What was your favourite TV programme?
Hmm. Too many to list? Although I haven't been watching as much as I used to. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is flipping brilliant. Girl Meets World is super lame, but it earns mega points for the nostalgia factor alone. It's getting better though! Cory/Topanga forever! Cory/Shawn for longer than forever!

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Hate is such a strong word! Seriously thought, if the truth be told, I rather despise our former helper. The stealing, the lying, that I could handle. The traumatising my BabyGirl to the point where BabyGirl was always tense and terrified? NOT. COOL. If I ever saw The Bitch again, I'd probably punch her.

26. What was the best book(s) you read?
Oooh, good one. Oh goodness, I have to pick oneI can't remember all the books I read this year! Let's see...The Kite Runner was amazing. Totally blew me away.  A recent read that affected me was The Confession, by John Grisham. Hadn't read a Grisham in ages, and this one stayed with me for a bit.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Wow, so many! Foy Vance, Passenger, and White Lies, to name a few.

28. What did you want and get?
An iPad mini. Thanks, Dadman! Even more importantly, a good contract with a good team and a good boss. 3 for 3!

29. What did you want and not get?
Still waiting on that million dollars. Haven't gotten my bookshelves up. My 500ish books are all hidden away in a cupboard.

30. What were your favourite films of this year?
Cap 2: The Winter Soldier, hands down.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
3 is the magic number, and now I'm a double-3. MAGIC!
Went to work, then went for dinner drinks with a new colleague, with whom I immediately clicked, and whose company I much enjoy.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
There's a hur hur in here somewhere...
2014 was an awesome year, full of satisfying moments. Would have been brilliant to see Nekowife though. Didn't get to travel much this year, and I've decided not to do any big trips for a while yet. Good thing 2015 has lots of long weekends!

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2014?
Still so much red! Once again, my red heels, as much as possible. So much that I've had to retire them. For the first half of the year, lazy clothes as much as possible. Mostly jammies.  I cleaned up nicely the second half of the year, and was coordinated and stylish.  New favourite piece is my tan (p)leather jacket.
I think my current style is...any combination of the 5 Cs: Comfortable, Casual, Classy, Cute, Contemporary.

34. What kept you sane?
Sanity is such a subjective concept.  I've never been quite sure of mine.  BabyGirl kept me grounded though.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Chris Evans still has my heart.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Feminism, and LGBT rights.

37. Who did you miss?
Still miss my Gramps.
Always miss my boys when they're not around (and then long for peace and quiet when the tornadoes show up!).
I missed Shoes, when I didn't hang with her for ages.
I don't really miss Doof, until we start chatting again, then I realise that I have indeed missed him. Yes, that's Ki-logic for you.
Definitely missed Nekowife lots. Perhaps I'll go see her in 2015!

38. Who was the best new person you met?
I'm going to go with most of the people from my project team.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2014.
Learnt how to bite my tongue and keep my mouth shut.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year?
I'm all about that bass, 'bout that bass, no treble...

2013: A Year in Review

It's that time of year again, is it not? Just going to re-use this old meme for now.

1. What did you do in 2013 that you’d never done before?
Hmm. Attended Landmark. Went to Pattaya. Had a bunch of friends over for Christmas (I'm usually the one going to their place!)
Couple other things that will remain censored on this blog! ;)

2. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't make resolutions. Well, not the standard fare anyway. I live life with an attitude of gratitude, and I resolve to continue that throughout 2014.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
My younger cousin gave birth to her fourth this year. FOUR KIDS. And she's only 25. Yikes!

Another cousin's wife had their first kid. Not close to them though...

Other than them, nobody else. Are the baby making machines losing steam? Come on, people. Get to it.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Nobody close to me. Old classmate of my sister's passed on a while ago; she was only 36 and had two young children, which is really sad.

5. What countries did you visit?
Thailand and the Philippines. To be precise, Pattaya and Manila.

6. What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013?
ONE MILLION DOLLARS. Seriously, would love to get a place of my own, but right now, I figure I might as well wait.

7. What date from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory?
I doubt I'll remember any particular date. Such great times, though!

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Organising all the travel arrangements for the guys, especially the rush demobilisation for the evacuation from Typhoon Haiyan (aka Yolanda).
Learning to let go and be free. LIEAM!

9. What was your biggest failure?
Hmm. Failure to meet deadlines for school papers, I suppose. Other than that...failure? Me? Pffft.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Other than the occasional sniffle, I think a very slight asthma attack, few headaches and hangovers...nope, all good!

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Experiences. They're priceless.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Mine.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Sadly, a family member's. But...water off a duck's back, I suppose.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Taxis, my biggest vice. Alcoholic beverages. Travelling.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
I'm really excited about this weekend! Even though it's technically next year...I'm going to Tioman!

16. What song/album will always remind you of 2013?
Hmm. Probably Haddaway's Life. Yes, it came out in 1993, but it made more of an impact this year!
Oh, and Snoop Dogg's Drop it Like it's Hot. Inside joke!

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a. Happier or sadder? Happier!
b. Thinner or fatter? Definitely not thinner! About the same, perhaps fatter. I prefer to call it 'more prosperous!
c. Richer or poorer? Hmm. Poorer. Mostly because I used up savings in the 8 months that I wasn't working (but still going out and going on holidays). Also, I'm waiting for my salary and bonus to come in.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Travel.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Whinging and binging.

20. How will you be spending/did you spend Christmas?
Spent it with family and friends, as always, and had a brilliant time. Too much food, lots of alcohol, loads of fun.

21. Who did you spend the most time on the phone with?
Hmm. I rarely talk on the phone, so I'm going with SarahLee. But mostly the LFIA group. An hour a week? That's a lot!

22. Did you fall in love in 2013?
Nope. Fell in lust, plenty plenty!

23. How many one night stands in this last year?
I'm not publishing this one!

24. What was your favourite TV programme?
Ugh, TV addictions. Let's see...Supernatural (after marathonning 7 seasons in one month, 'course I was hooked!) and QI. Started watching Agents of SHIELD...which isn't too bad, I suppose.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Nope. Why waste time and energy on hate?

26. What was the best book(s) you read?
I can't decide...

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Jeez, I don't know, really.

28. What did you want and get?
More friends. Better yet, authentic friends. :D

29. What did you want and not get?
ONE MILLION DOLLARS. Other than that, nothing!

30. What were your favourite films of this year?
I'm going to have to go with Iron Man 3. Because Iron Man.
Enjoyed Percy Jackson too, but mostly cos I was with Nephew Shay. Monsters Uni was a fun jaunt too!

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Woke up in a king-sized bed in a foreign country, after having far too much booze the night/morning before. Worked and ran around a lot (in stilettos!) and then settled down in the evening for much boozing with the work team. :D

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Winning ONE MILLION DOLLARS. Other than that, why bother about what ifs and what could have beens? My year was already immeasurably satisfying!

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2013?
My red heels, as much as possible. Lots of black. And red.

34. What kept you sane?
Sanity is overrated.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Chris Evans stole my heart. The American actor, not the British DJ.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
LGBT rights.

37. Who did you miss?
My gramps. He passed away many years ago, but I miss him still.
I also miss the boys when they're not around.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
The gang from LF.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2013.
LIEAM.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year?
Life will never be the same!

2011: A Year In Review

Yoinked this meme from Neko, who posted it on her LJ.

1. What did you do in 2011 that you’d never done before?
I voted!

2. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't make resolutions. I did Mission 101, or the Day Zero Project, and my 101st day was in September. I took a hiatus from it in 2009, due to illness in the family, but looking over it now, I realise that I've completed several of the items, and have done so much more to boot.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yes! TehTarik gave birth to a gorgeous little boy, my sis gave birth to an even more gorgeous boy, who is now my Godson. And even though we're not close now, so it doesn't really count, TW has a girl.
Did I miss anyone?

4. Did anyone close to you die?
I do know a couple people who passed away, and we were closely related, but sadly, we weren't close.

5. What countries did you visit?
The UK and France. To be more precise, the two cities of London and Paris.

6. What would you like to have in 2012 that you lacked in 2011?
ONE MILLION DOLLARS. Wouldn't mind having a kitchen of my own!

7. What date from 2011 will remain etched upon your memory?
None in particular, really. I have such good memories of this year, but can't remember any particular date.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I became a godmother. Not quite an "achievement"; but definitely the greatest honour.
I grew closer to family, I made new friends. I travelled alone.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Failure?

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Isn't OCD a mental illness? Several bruises, far too many papercuts, and the occasional case of the sniffles.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
I have to pick one? I guess my Macbook; I use it almost every day, and I love it. Oh, and my 3 terabyte hard drive. Ugh, I think I'm turning into a geek.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
I don't think I've ever celebrated behaviour...

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
I'd rather not say, but it's pretty much the same person that I complain about all the time!

14. Where did most of your money go?
Ugh. Taxis. Stupid, bad habit. Oh, and food. And travel, which I don't regret at all!

Trip to London!

16. What song/album will always remind you of 2011?
The soundtrack to Les Misérables.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
1. Happier or sadder? Definitely happier.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Travel.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Binging on cookies and jaffa cakes.

20. How will you be spending/did you spend Christmas?

Stayed in love. Started moving on.

23. How many one night stands in this last year?
I don't kiss and tell!

24. What was your favourite TV programme?
Too many to mention! I was hooked on:
Criminal Minds, White Collar, Suits, Sherlock (BBC), The Walking Dead, QI...the list goes on.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
"Hate" is such a strong word...

26. What was the best book(s) you read?
I guess I didn't read any great books this year. Nothing that I felt was blogworthy, at least.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Jeez, I don't know. I know I did discover a few bands that I've come to love, which is always good.

28. What did you want and get?
A KitchenAid! A MacBook!

29. What did you want and not get?
ONE MILLION DOLLARS. Oh, and my driver's licence.

Didn't really watch any films this year...

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Winning ONE MILLION DOLLARS.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2011?
Ahahahahahahahaha me and fashion. I wear what needs the least effort.

34. What kept you sane?
'Sane' is such a subjective notion.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Ooh. Where do I even begin? Benedict Cumberbatch and Matt Bomer are the most beautiful, that's for sure.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The "Elections".

37. Who did you miss?
Hey, moving on, remember?

38. Who was the best new person you met?
Best new person? They're all brilliant!

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011.
That the easiest way to let go, is to simply let go.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year?
I don't remember lyrics.
